Adding your AI key — 3 minutes, once.

Shipshape's AI features (smart filing, folder summaries, semantic search, document review) run on your own Anthropic key — you pay Anthropic directly for exactly what you use, usually cents. Shipshape adds nothing on top.

You don't need this to use Shipshape. Organizing, duplicates, junk cleanup, Space Lens, text search and OCR are fully on-device and free — no key, no account. AI is the optional layer on top. What the AI can and can't see →
  1. Create an Anthropic account

Go to console.anthropic.com and sign up (Google sign-in works). Anthropic makes Claude, the AI Shipshape uses.

  2. Add billing and set a monthly limit

In the console: Settings → Billing. Add a card and — recommended — set a monthly spend limit (even $5 covers heavy personal use). That cap is enforced by Anthropic, so there are no surprises.

  3. Create a key

Settings → API keys → Create key. Name it anything ("Shipshape"), then copy the key — it looks like sk-ant-… and is shown only once.

  4. Paste it into Shipshape

Open Shipshape → Settings (bottom of the sidebar) → AI engine → paste the key → Save. The sidebar pill flips to “AI engine connected”. Done — every AI feature now works.

What it actually costs

Real numbers from the app's own estimate screens — Shipshape shows you the count and cost before every document-reading run:

AI-search 1,000 documents≈ $0.20
Smart-file a typical messy folder (hundreds of files)≈ $0.10–0.50
Plain-English report on a business folder≈ $0.20–1.00
A heavy month of regular usea few dollars

Where the key lives

On your Mac, in Shipshape's local settings file, readable by your account only. It's sent to no one but Anthropic itself when you use an AI feature. Remove it any time: Settings → “Remove the saved key”.

Prefer not to deal with keys at all? A no-key option — Treemoondus AI, a small monthly plan that just works out of the box — is coming shortly after launch. Tell us if you want it sooner.
